Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. The family was dominated by her grandmother, as a single child. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She studied secondary education over the course of two years while also working. Her goal was to be the high school's English teacher. Her dream to become an English teacher at high school was shattered when she dropped out of school. Her first job was as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work at live poetry readings and ultimately joined together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by them. During an Roots show she made her debut in the spotlight as an artist. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. During the Canada tour for The Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable performance experience. She was the first signed artist on the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
